What is an Urban Meadow?

A vibrant, natural space in a city or suburb where native wildflowers and grasses grow freely, creating a haven for pollinators, birds, and small wildlife.

An urban meadow can be as small as a few pollinator-friendly pots on a balcony, or as big as a 10 x 10 plot that transforms part of your front yard, back yard, or garden area into a thriving ecosystem.

Unlike traditional lawns, an urban meadow embraces nature’s rhythm, requiring minimal maintenance while adding beauty, movement, and biodiversity to urban spaces.

They can be a little wild, wonderfully alive — an urban meadow is a reminder that even in the heart of a city, town or suburb, nature has a place to flourish!

Our Goals:

  • Support Biodiversity – provide food and shelter for birds, bees, butterflies, and fireflies.
  • Sustainable Growth – use native plants that thrive naturally with minimal maintenance.
  • Functional Beauty – blend flowers, grasses, and a vegetable garden for both aesthetics and purpose.

Every bloom, buzz, and flutter is a step toward a healthier, more vibrant environment!

Welcoming Wild Visitors — Who’s Joining the Party?

The Urban Meadows Project helps you build & support the native meadows for nature’s VIPs — pollinators, fireflies, and our feathered friends!

  • Butterflies – swallowtails love dill and fennel, while monarchs can’t resist milkweed. They’ll be fluttering in for a feast!
  • Bees & Fireflies – native bees are buzzing for goldenrod and coneflowers, while fireflies just need a little leaf litter to light up the night.
  • Birds – cardinals, finches, and hummingbirds? Yes, please! With berries, nectar-rich blooms, and seed heads, this garden is their new favourite hangout.

Growing Together: Sharing the Journey

Through projects and certifications, the Urban Meadows Project will inspire communities to reconnect with nature.

We’ll share our experiences through social media and our blog, offering tips, lessons learned, and plenty of trial-and-error moments.

  • Community Connection – encouraging neighbours and local groups to plant native flowers and create wildlife-friendly spaces.
  • Inspiring Change – helping others rethink their outdoor spaces to support pollinators and biodiversity.

We will be Sharing our Journey – documenting successes (and flops) to make the process fun and accessible for everyone!
