How to Grow Coneflowers from Seed

Native coneflowers are a must-have for any pollinator garden.

Their long-lasting blooms provide months of nectar for bees, butterflies, and other helpful insects.
Their seed heads are a feast for goldfinches in the fall — a delightful bonus for bird lovers – so collect some to grow from seed and leave the rest for the birds.

1. Start with Stratification

About 4-6 weeks before planting, place your seeds on a damp paper towel, fold it over, and tuck it into a sealed plastic bag.

Set the bag flat on a plate and pop it in the fridge.

This chilly treatment mimics winter conditions and encourages the seeds to sprout when planted.

2. Sow the Seeds

Once stratified, plant the seeds indoors about 8-10 weeks before your last frost date.

Use a light, well-draining seed-starting mix.

Fill small trays or pots with the soil, then sprinkle the seeds on top and gently press them into the soil — no need to bury them too deeply.

When your seedlings are about 3 inches tall and the threat of frost is gone, start introducing them to the outdoors. Begin by placing them in a shady spot for short periods, then gradually increase their exposure to sunlight over several days.

Once your coneflowers are hardened off, transplant them into larger pots with fresh potting soil until they’re strong enough to move to your garden beds.
